ACQTC Councils

Traditional council sketch

ACQTC Dual Councils System

AQCTC has two levels of political organization, as is traditional for the Algonquian Confederacies:

  1. QUINNIPIAC TRIBAL COUNCIL mawiomi (central fire) of Elders who represent the Quinnipiac Sachemdoms and allies who have entered into a covenant with ACQTC.
  2. GRAND COUNCIL OF CONFEDERATE ALLIES who are Algonquian, Iroquoian, non-Indian, and Public organizations who hold a seat in this Grand Council, and sit as Ambassadors of their respective tribal nations, bands, groups, and interests.

Together we pursue an active interest in many political, social and cultural areas that affect our people.

Algonquian Council of the Dawnland

When the Dutch first arrived in “New Netherlands” they marvelled at the political democracy practiced by the Algonquian Dawnlanders. The following quote is from Vander Donck’s New Netherlands which appears in the Collections of the New York Historical Society, Second Series edited by H.C. Murphy, Vol. II, 1849 at page 204:

They do not resolve and decide (matters) hastily… but on all important matters, all of the chiefs (sachems) and persons of any distinction in the nation assemble in their councils, when each of them express their opinions freely on the subject before the council, as briefly or as extendedly as they please… If the speaker even digresses from the matter at hand, or opposes others, he is heard with attention; if they approve of what has been said at the conclusion they shout and cheer the orator. Their councils assemble in the morning while the sun is ascending, and if the business is not done before noon they adjourn until the next morning…

When they assemble to rejoice or dance, they meet at midday. On those occasions, an orator first delivers an address on the occasions, and cause of the meeting, after which they entertain themselves by eating and feasting; this they also do sometimes at their councils. They eat lustily on such occasions, and every one devours as much food as would serve each of them for three days, as nothing may be left…

This last tradition of feasting after important council decisions is known as nickommo and is done eight times a year in conjunction with the 8-part ceremonial cycle of the Algonquian Dawnland.
